The National Aquarium opened on August 8, 1981 as the jewel of Baltimore City’s Inner Harbor redevelopment. With a mission to inspire conservation of the world’s aquatic treasures, the Aquarium is consistently ranked as one of the nation’s top three aquariums, and as Maryland’s largest paid tourist attraction. It features thousands of fish, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals — all living in award-winning habitats.
For such a large organization, the National Aquarium has a relatively small fundraising team that needed to re-prioritize their fundraising efforts and maximize its fundraising efficiency. The 15-person team works across many of the organization’s sub-units, and is responsible for the Aquarium’s fundraising. Kristin Vitale, the Aquarium’s Events and Research Manager, describes the team as small but mighty, saying, “we’re a small team that fundraises large.”
