The idea of the WHO Foundation was born when the Trump administration withdrew from the World Health Organization (WHO). Losing its biggest financial contributor posed big financial challenges for the organization, but also inspired it to diversify its funding channels. Since raising funds from businesses and individuals is not permitted by the statutes of the WHO, the Foundation, which was created in 2020 and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, is affiliated with but independent of the WHO. Its goal is to marshal new resources from philanthropists, foundations, businesses, and individuals to support its mission: promote health, keep the world safe, and serve the vulnerable.
The foundation hit the ground running with two major funding campaigns in the midst of the pandemic: Go Give One (working alongside GAVI) to fund vaccines, and the Solidarity Response Fund, which focuses on healthcare practices and infrastructure around the world. The WHO Foundation is fundraising
